Ford has announced a major recall affecting close to 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks in North America due to a transmission problem that could cause the vehicle to suddenly downshift without warning.

Which models are affected?

The recall covers 2015, 2016, and 2017 Ford F-150 trucks equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission.rea

What’s the problem?

According to Ford, the issue stems from a loss of signal between the transmission range sensor and the powertrain control module (PCM). This communication failure can cause the transmission to unexpectedly downshift into second gear — regardless of how fast the truck is going.

This sudden reduction in speed could increase the risk of a rear-end collision or make it harder for the driver to maintain control of the vehicle.

What will Ford do to fix it?

Authorized dealers will update the PCM calibration software free of charge. If an affected vehicle has already shown specific diagnostic trouble codes related to this condition prior to the software update, dealers will also replace the transmission lead frame under a corresponding extended warranty program — again, at no cost to the owner.

How to contact Ford

Vehicle owners can reach Ford customer service at 866-436-7332 for more information or to check if their truck is included in the recall.
