What are the most popular car brands in the world?

If we judge the popularity of a car or brand by its total sales in the whole world, it may not give us the most accurate idea of the most popular one. In fact, each country or region has different vehicle demand and environment. For example, Kei cars (a small form factor cars) are very popular in Japan, having the highest sales number in the country; In the United States however, the Ford pickup is possibly the most popular vehicle. Ford sells around a million pickups in many different models in a year. Why? Because pickups are very versatile . Ford has been the best selling truck since 1977 in the US. Furthermore, Americans like pickup: its sales rank number one compared to other cars in the country. All of that being said, despite the smaller size of Kei car, size conscious Chinese don't like it. Moreover, despite the versatility of Pickup cars, adventurous Europeans don't like it.

Therefore, to judge the popularity of a brand, we believe that looking at the number of countries where that brand is the top selling one is a better representation of the car popularity than the whole sales number it has in the world.

Recently, Regtransfers - the largest car license dealer in the UK - released the following data map which shows the distribution of the best-selling car brands in the world's major countries / regions in 2016. It's not hard to see from the figure that although VW is the sales champion in 2016, Toyota was the best-selling brand in more countries, which is a better metrics in defining its popularity.
